❓ How to Create a Quiz for My Activity?

The Afterschool Quiz Builder is a powerful tool that can help you create interactive and innovative quizzes for participants.
It offers 10 modern yet familiar question types to test participants' knowledge of the activity content, and also offers several customization options to perfectly adapt the tests to your needs.

Quiz Info

To get started, from the activity builder, navigate to a topic and click the +Quiz button.

This will open the Quiz Builder window with its very first section called Quiz Info. Here, give the quiz a Title and add a short summary to inform participants what this quiz is about.
To proceed to the next step, i.e. Questions, simply click on the Save and Next button.

Quiz Description

The Quiz Question Description field allows quiz creators to add rich text formatting, images, videos, and more to their quiz question descriptions.
In fact, quiz creators can add:
•             Text styles like bold, italics, underlines, text color, etc.
•             Bullets and numbered lists
•             Hyperlinks
•             Images and videos via embed codes or URL links
•             Audio files like podcasts via embed codes

Next, you will come to the Answer Explanation section. Here, you can provide a concise but informative explanation to help participants understand the correct answers and the reasoning behind them.

Participants can access the explanation from the Quiz Details page only after taking the quiz. The image above shows a preview of the quiz explanation.

Types of Questions

In the Questions step, you can start adding questions to the quiz by clicking on the Add Question button. This will take you to the Question form where you must first select the Question Type.
As mentioned earlier, there are a total of 10 question types. Here is a list of these types along with an explanation of how they work.

True/False

To set up a true/false question, first select your question type as True/False. Then you will be given the option to choose the answer. Then write your question and choose the answer. Click the radio button to choose the correct answer.

Unique Choice

Use the single-choice quiz format if you want to ask a multiple-choice question with only one correct answer. To add the options, click Add Option and set the answer in the Answer Title, upload an image if necessary, and select your preferred display format.
Finally, click Update Answer and repeat these steps for the other options. Remember to specify the correct answer at the end.

Multiple Choice

Multiple choice question is almost similar to single choice answer. If you want to list multiple correct answers for a single question, choose multiple choice option. Thus, participants will get full marks only if they select all the correct answers while answering the question.

Open Response

A long answer question type where participants can give descriptive answers, as this field may have a higher character limit. To set this character limit, go to Quiz Builder > Settings > Advanced Settings and find the Character limit field for open-ended/essay questions.

Short Answer

A descriptive type question with a more specific and shorter answer. Activity organizers can set the Character Limit from Settings > Advanced Settings under Character Limit for Short Answers in the Quiz Builder.

Fill in the blanks

Provide a sentence inviting participants to fill in the missing blanks with the correct answers (the lines representing the blanks are created with dashes _).
Here, first enter the question and then click Add Option.

Next, re-enter your entire question under Question Title and replace the blanks with the {dash} variable. Under this field, define your Correct Answers separated by a vertical line |. The image above is an example.

Participants will see something like what is shown in the image above when they take the quiz.

Correspondence

Use this answer category only if you want to set a question template where respondents must match answers. To do this, enter your question and click Add Option. Enter your choice to match and the corresponding answer.
You can also upload an image with the choice to match. Finally, select the display format you prefer and repeat these steps to add more options.

Putting in Order

Offer an ordering question where participants must rearrange the given text, images, or both into the correct sequence to earn points.
Here, click Add Option and enter your first answer element under the Answer Title field. As with the previous question types, you can also upload an image to accompany this.
Repeat these steps to add more items and make sure you add them in the correct order.

Participants will see something like what is shown in the image above when they take the quiz.

Image Matching

Offer a matching question type where participants can match an image to the correct text for points.
To implement this, enter your question, click Add Option and upload your image prompt, enter its corresponding answer and click Update Answer. Repeat these steps to add more options.

Answers in Pictures

Offer a type of identification question where participants have to answer questions based on the images.
Similar to Image Matching, click Add Option, upload your image, and then enter its matching answer. Finally, click Update Answer and repeat these steps to add more options.

Question

On the Question Form, add the question text, select the type from the drop-down list, and add a description if you want. Next, here are some settings for each question that you need to understand to use them best:
• Required Response: Enable this if you want this question to be required.
• Random : Enable this if you want the order of this question to be randomly shuffled among the list of questions.
• Points for this answer: Use this field to set the points to be awarded for a correct answer to this question.
• Show points: Enable this if you want to display points on the quiz field.
Add the relevant answer(s) and select the correct answer if necessary.

Answer Explanation: Next, you will see a field called “Answer Explanation” where you can add the explanation for the correct answer.
Keep in mind that this is an optional field, so you can leave it blank if you don't want to add an explanation.
This field is available for any question type and participants will be able to see it from the Quiz Details page.
Once the quiz is submitted, click the Details button next to each Quiz Attempt. Then, expand any question item to see its Answer Explanation.
Once done, click Add to Questions to save. This will take you back to the previous window where you will see the new question already added.
💡Trick : Click the action menu icon (three dots icon) next to the question to access the Edit and Delete options.
To add more questions, simply click the Add Question button again and repeat the same steps. Once you are done adding all the questions, click the Save and Next button to move on to the final step of building the quiz, which is Settings.

Settings

In this section, you can use the following settings to adjust the quiz behavior according to your preferences. Let's briefly explain all these settings:

Time Limit

You can set a time limit here in seconds, minutes, hours, days, and weeks. Use 0 if you don't want to set a time limit. Additionally, you can also hide the quiz time by toggling the Hide Quiz Time button.

Quiz Return Mode

Decide how you want to provide quiz feedback to your participants once they have completed the quiz. Tooltips give you an idea of what each mode means.
Here you will have three different feedback modes. These are:
• Default: Answers are displayed after the quiz ends.
• Mode of Revelation: Answers are displayed after the attempt.
Mode of New Attempt : Retake the quiz as many times as needed. You can set the number of times participants can retake a quiz using the Number of Attempts Allowed setting.

Passing Grade

Specifies the passing grade for this quiz. You can set the passing grade as a percentage only.

Maximum Number of Questions Allowed to be Answered

This function is introduced to randomize questions in a quiz. The usefulness of this function will be clearer with an example.
This option is a bit tricky. Let's take an example. Suppose you have 50 questions in a quiz, if you put 50 here, a participant will have to answer all 50 questions to complete the quiz. But if you put 10 here, the participant will have to answer only 10 questions out of the 50, and these 10 questions will appear randomly. No two participants will get the same set of questions.

Advanced Settings

The following options are some additional advanced settings that you can access by clicking on the Advanced Settings heading.
• Auto Start Quiz: Enable this to start the quiz immediately after the page loads.
• Arrangement of Questions: Set the layout for the quiz page. Options include Single Question, Pagination, and Question Below Others.
• Order of Questions: Select the order of questions provided to you. Options include Random, Sort, Ascending, and Descending.
• Hide Question Number: Select to hide the question number during the quiz.
• Character Limit for Short Answers: Select the character limit for short answers.
• Character Limit for Open Responses/Essays: Select the character limit for open-ended responses/essays.
Finally, once you are happy with the settings, click Save and Next again to save your quiz. It should appear under the topic you chose in the Activity Builder.
To Edit the quiz, simply click on the edit icon which is located to the right of the quiz list, and to Delete it, click on the trash can icon right next to it.

Making Quiz Completion Mandatory

1. On the Activity Builder page, under Activity Settings, activate the Drip by Drip of Content and set its type as Sequentially Available Activity Content.
2. At this point, update the activity to ensure this change is applied.
3. Then, since the Quiz Builder > Settings, set the Quiz Return Mode as Retry Mode.
4. Finally you should see the toggle Mandatory Success appear under the Attempts Allowed slider. All you have to do now is enable this option, click Save and Next, and Update your activity to save the changes.

And there you have it, it is now mandatory for your participants to pass this quiz in order to access the activity material that follows!
If they fail a quiz that requires passing and try to access the next lesson, they will now receive a message like this:

Note : Keep in mind that if a quiz contains open-ended questions that require the organizer's review, the content of the next activity will not be available until the organizer has done so.
